“Wembanyama’s Olympic Journey: A Warning for Future Rivals!”

Victor Wembanyama reflected on his development and the growth of European basketball, issuing a warning to future competitors: “I’m learning and I’m concerned for the opponents in a couple of years. NBA, FIBA, everywhere.”

In the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics, Wembanyama scored 26 points, but it wasn’t enough for France to overcome Team USA, losing 98-87. His performance also included 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

After the final game, Wembanyama expressed pride in his team’s efforts throughout the tournament, saying, “We’re going to enjoy the moment. It’s great. I’m proud of my teammates. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved here in France in front of our fans. I’m going to let it all soak in.”

The San Antonio Spurs rookie, 20, averaged 21.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 10.6 rebounds during his inaugural NBA season and contributed 15.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game for France in the Olympics. Despite struggling with his shooting, finishing at 29% from three-point range and 63.6% from the free-throw line, he played a pivotal role in keeping France competitive before Steph Curry’s four consecutive three-pointers sealed the game for Team USA.

Wembanyama highlighted his commitment to his team’s success, stating, “I always try to help my team in whatever is needed, and I’m ready to make any sacrifice. Tonight was scoring. In the earlier games, the defense was focused on me, allowing my teammates like Isaia Cordinier, Guerschon Yabusele, and Mathias Lessort to shine.”

Regarding his overall performance at the Olympics, Wembanyama was confident in his impact, asserting, “I’m learning and I’m worried for the opponents in a couple of years. The gap between the NBA and the rest of the world is narrowing. Europe is definitely catching up a little bit.”

The young star expressed a mix of emotion during the medal ceremony, particularly during the national anthem, where he was vocal and enthusiastic. When asked about the experience, he said, “It’s an incredible experience. The anthem is one of my favorite parts. I’m only 20, and I don’t know when I’ll experience something like this again. It makes me want to cry. It was just such a chance.”
