Six recipients of social welfare have made remarkable progress toward financial independence through the Government’s Welfare Graduation Programme. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, aims to help families move away from long-term dependency on welfare and toward sustainable, income-generating activities.
In a recent funding round, the Government allocated around $11,000 to support beneficiaries in launching or expanding their small businesses. With assistance from Mr. Veremos Muria, the Director of Social Protection, the grants were distributed to a variety of ventures. These include jewellery making, canteen services, flower arrangements, greenhouse nurseries, and frozen food production, with businesses set up in communities such as Nasinu, Nalidi, Delasui, Dawasamu, and Verata.
At the handover event, Mr. Muria highlighted the significance of practicing sound business principles. He urged recipients to keep their business decisions separate from cultural and family obligations, stressing that discipline and strategic planning are crucial for long-term success.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the financial assistance, emphasizing that the grants would help them expand their businesses, decrease reliance on welfare, and create a more secure future for their families. This ongoing programme showcases the Government’s dedication to empowering vulnerable households, promoting self-sufficiency, and fostering sustainable economic opportunities, which offers a positive outlook for both the recipients and their communities.
