Weekend Storm to Bring Rain and Thunder to Central Texas

A low-pressure system moving across northern Texas later this week is set to bring significant weather changes to Central Texas. As several minor cold fronts have recently swept through the region, offering brief cool spells and light showers, the upcoming storm system is expected to make a larger impact this weekend.

Beginning Friday, a low-pressure system will move off the Southern Rockies, bringing a cold front that will extend into West Texas. This will place Central Texas in an influx of warm, moist air which may lead to isolated light showers throughout Friday afternoon.

By late Friday night, the cold front is expected to approach the Texas Hill Country, triggering thunderstorms, some of which could be strong or severe. Areas around Dallas and south of Austin should be closely monitoring weather updates as this system develops. It is anticipated that the weather system will slow down on Saturday, resulting in additional, albeit less intense, chances for rain and thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening. Due to cloud cover and rain, Saturday afternoon temperatures are predicted to remain in the lower 80s.

The line of storms is expected to arrive in the Hill Country between 10 p.m. Friday and midnight Saturday. The threat for strong storms could emerge along this front, accompanied by heavy rain that might reduce visibility and raise concerns over flash flooding, given the dry conditions in the area. The cold front should progress quickly, moving eastward between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., with widespread rain anticipated across Central Texas.

Projected rainfall totals indicate that areas west of Interstate 35 could see between 0.50 to 1 inch, while neighborhoods along and east of I-35 might receive 1 to 2 inches or more. The majority of this precipitation is expected to occur during the initial passage of the cold front on Saturday, with some isolated showers potentially lingering into the afternoon and evening. Sunday, in contrast, should bring clear and breezy conditions, with high temperatures again in the lower 80s.

While the risk of severe weather remains low, it’s important for residents to stay informed, particularly as this will be the first significant rainfall in about 45 days. Those with plans throughout the weekend should keep an eye on weather updates, especially during the night when the bulk of the storms are expected. Travelers on Saturday morning should also allow extra time for their journeys, taking into account potential weather impacts. Regular updates regarding severe weather possibilities will be available throughout the week.
