The first weekend of the year is proving to be anything but tranquil as significant wet weather sweeps into the Northstate. Starting late on Friday, residents are facing a series of storm systems that are expected to affect the area throughout the weekend. The most intense rainfall is anticipated to conclude by 9 AM on Saturday; however, intermittent showers are likely to persist throughout the day, alongside the potential for thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center has put forth a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms covering the North Coast and Sacramento Valley, indicating a possibility of wind gusts exceeding 58 MPH and brief tornado formation. It’s important to note that while the tornado risk remains low—approximately a 2% chance of occurrence within a 25-mile radius—preparations are advisable.

Rainfall amounts are projected to range from 0.50 to 1.50 inches in most regions, with higher totals expected in locations such as Redding, Paradise, and Mount Shasta City. As the storm progresses, mountain snow will also be notable, predominantly affecting areas above 5,000 feet in elevation. This could complicate travel through mountain passes, though snowfall in lower Northstate communities is not expected until later Saturday night. A minor dusting may occur near areas like Burney and Shingletown, while several inches could accumulate in Chester by Sunday.

Winds have intensified as the storm approaches, with gusts reaching 35-45 MPH in many lower elevation areas on Saturday. Although these winds are expected to subside on Sunday, the unsettled weather will continue, ensuring that calm conditions remain elusive for the time being.
