Millions of residents in Texas and Oklahoma are being warned about the risk of significant flooding starting Thursday night and continuing into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The impending weather event raises concerns, particularly considering the recent history of devastating flash floods in Texas, especially in the Hill Country.

A flood watch has been issued for several areas, including north-central Texas cities such as Fort Worth, Dallas, Waco, and Denton, and extends into Oklahoma, affecting cities including Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Ada. The flood watch will take effect at 7 p.m. CT Thursday for various counties in Oklahoma, including Caddo and Canadian, and will commence later for parts of northern Texas.

The NWS has indicated that excessive rainfall could lead to flooding in rivers, creeks, and urban areas, as well as other low-lying regions. Rainfall estimates suggest that accumulations could reach between 2 to 3 inches, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 5 inches.

Experts from NWS Fort Worth and NWS Tulsa have reiterated the need for residents to stay informed about changing weather conditions. They emphasize that despite a recent dry spell, the forecasted heavy rains could create isolated flooding scenarios. This weekend’s weather may see a series of showers and storms leading to risks in flood-prone areas.

As potential flooding looms, the NWS urges those in vulnerable locations to stay vigilant and prepare for possible emergency action. The situation serves as a reminder of the critical importance of emergency preparedness in regions prone to heavy rainfall and flooding, reinforcing the need for communities to stay alert and proactive in safeguarding their homes and families.
