Week 8 Fantasy Football: Start-Sit Guide to Survive the Bye Week

Week 8 Fantasy Football: Start-Sit Guide to Survive the Bye Week

As the NFL enters Week 8, fantasy football managers are facing a challenging bye week with six teams off the roster. This scenario creates a pivotal moment for managers as they navigate player performances. Here are some recommended starts and players to fade heading into this week.

Quarterbacks

One player to start is Bo Nix of the Broncos, whose explosive performance in Week 7 turned a lackluster outing into the highest-scoring fantasy game by a quarterback this season. He faces a Dallas Cowboys defense that has been generous, allowing an average of 25.1 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks and ranking 30th in expected points added (EPA) per dropback allowed. Nix will likely benefit from a favorable game script as the Broncos have a solid team total of 27 points, suggesting a promising offensive outing.

Joe Flacco, now with the Bengals, is also a strong start. Since joining the team, he has consistently increased his pass rate, throwing for a notable 551 yards and five touchdowns. With the Jets lacking key defensive personnel, particularly Sauce Gardner, Flacco is positioned to exploit a vulnerable defense.

In contrast, C.J. Stroud of the Texans is a sit this week. With a disappointing season that has seen him ranked as QB20, and having struggled to consistently produce substantial numbers, Stroud is unlikely to meet the expectations during this bye week. Similarly, Michael Penix of the Falcons faces a daunting challenge; as they are heavy favorites against the Dolphins, it is probable they will lean heavily on their ground game, reducing Penix’s aerial opportunities.

Running Backs

For running backs, Jaylen Warren of the Steelers should be a player to start. He has taken command of the Pittsburgh backfield, showcasing his versatility and becoming a crucial part of the passing game. The Packers have allowed a high number of targets to running backs, making this matchup advantageous for Warren.

Isaiah Pacheco of the Chiefs is another strong candidate to start. The Chiefs’ ability to dominate games is reflected in Pacheco’s inconsistent performances, but in games where his team leads significantly, his fantasy output spikes. With a favorable match against the Commanders, he is poised for a productive day.

However, sit Jacory Croskey-Merritt this week. His low target share and the present struggling ground game make him a poor choice for fantasy points. Tony Pollard also finds himself on the sit list, with a disappointing season performance thus far, and recent trends suggest he may not find success against a highly competitive Titans defense.

Wide Receivers

Michael Pittman from the Colts is primed for a breakout game against the Titans. The Colts’ high projected team total and the absence of key defensive players for Tennessee makes this matchup favorable for Pittman, who has shown strong performance in clean pockets.

Stefon Diggs of the Bills is another start candidate, facing a Cleveland defense that struggles against explosive passing plays. Diggs thrives against man coverage and could have a field day against the Browns’ defensive scheme.

On the other hand, Xavier Worthy of the Chiefs should be on the bench this week. His declining target share, compounded by the emergence of Rashee Rice, suggests that Worthy could struggle to maintain any fantasy relevance. DJ Moore, too, has been largely ineffective and shows no signs of improvement, making him a risky play.

Tight Ends

Tucker Kraft of the Packers is a start candidate, bringing a solid reputation for yards after the catch (YAC) and facing a Steelers defense that has struggled against tight ends. His increase in targets shows promise for a solid fantasy outing.

Dalton Schultz of the Texans is also worth starting, particularly with the expected absence of Nico Collins. His impressive performance in Week 7 highlights his potential as a reliable PPR option moving forward.

However, Pat Freiermuth, despite an explosive game last week, should be considered for the sit list. With the fantasy landscape offering other viable options, reliance on Freiermuth may lead to unmet expectations. Travis Kelce is another player to fade in this matchup; his declining target share with the return of Rice makes him a less attractive fantasy choice.

Navigating the challenges of a bye-dominated week can be daunting, but making savvy starts and sits can set managers up for success in fantasy leagues.
