We Energies natural gas crews have completed a six-week restoration effort in southeast Wisconsin after the record-breaking rain and flooding in August. Technicians diligently replaced over 1,000 flood-damaged natural gas meters across several neighborhoods, focusing on those that had been submerged, as dirt and contaminants can lead to long-term damage or safety hazards.
According to Sean Quinn, Senior Field Operations Supervisor in Gas Operations, the affected areas were extensive, highlighting the unique challenge this event posed due to its widespread impact across the city. Teams worked on the south side, the north side of the city near Lincoln Creek, in West Allis near Honey Creek, and in Wauwatosa.
In an effort to reassure residents, Quinn noted there would be no fees for the construction work undertaken. This comprehensive task placed a heavy burden on We Energies’ employees, who worked long shifts, including weekends, to ensure the affected areas were swiftly serviced. Despite the intense workload, the crews maintained a strong focus on safety and dedication throughout the project.
Crews meticulously identified which equipment required replacement and managed to conduct daily service operations concurrently. The commitment of the workers, many of whom volunteered for extended hours, underscores the collaborative spirit and dedication to community safety and service. This achievement marks a significant step in ensuring the resilience and reliability of the region’s natural gas infrastructure after such a severe weather event.
