Waymo is set to launch its robotaxi service in parts of Atlanta on Tuesday, expanding its partnership with Uber, which originally began earlier this year in Austin. This expansion follows Tesla’s recent introduction of a limited robotaxi service in Austin, although Tesla is starting with a human in the passenger seat for safety reasons, whereas Waymo will operate fully driverless vehicles.
In Austin, Waymo and Uber have already deployed around 100 driverless vehicles in just four months. In Atlanta, the robotaxi services will be integrated into the Uber app, giving users the option to choose between a driverless ride or a traditional car operated by a human. Initially, the service will cover a 65-square-mile area, with plans for further expansion.
Waymo has established ride-hailing services in cities such as Phoenix, Los Angeles, and portions of the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, the partnership with Uber facilitates over 250,000 paid rides weekly, placing Waymo in a leading position within the emerging robotaxi market.
However, competition is intensifying as Tesla plans to rapidly develop its robotaxi service, and Amazon’s Zoox is preparing to launch its driverless cabs in Las Vegas, with aspirations to reach Atlanta in the future.
Uber’s previous ambitions to develop an in-house robotaxi service were curtailed after a legal confrontation with Waymo, leading the company to shift toward partnerships to remain competitive in the evolving landscape of autonomous ride-hailing.
Uber’s Sarfraz Maredia expressed confidence in this endeavour, stating that integrating Waymo’s technology aims to enhance transportation convenience, sustainability, and reliability. Moreover, with 18 robotaxi partnerships worldwide, Uber expects to facilitate approximately 1.5 million driverless trips annually, which could significantly reshape the future of transportation.
