Water Transport Prices Rise, Inflation in Focus

In the June quarter of this year, the cost of transport services in the country experienced a slight increase, according to the latest figures from the Producer Price Index (PPI) for Services. The PPI tracks changes in the price of services as they exit the producer, providing a key indicator of economic trends.

For land and water transport, the overall index rose to 126.5, marking a 1.2 percent increase from June 2024, and a 0.4 percent rise from March 2025. Examining the specifics, land transport prices showed little change from the previous quarter, standing at 126.9, which is slightly up by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year. More pronounced changes were observed in water transport, where prices climbed to 125.8, reflecting a 3.0 percent increase from the past year and a 1.3 percent uplift from the previous quarter.

This data underlines a gradual increase in transport service prices, with significant movement seen in the water transport sector, while land transport costs have maintained relative stability.

The trend of rising transport costs fits within a broader context of fluctuating prices in various sectors. Similar observations have been made in other areas, such as food and fuel, which have contributed to inflationary pressures within the economy. However, some sectors like diesel and kerosene have seen price reductions, which might offer some financial relief to consumers amidst these broader economic shifts.

It’s essential to continue monitoring these trends as they impact both consumer spending and broader economic activity. The gradual increase in transport service prices, particularly in water transport, highlights the importance of strategic planning and policy-making efforts to address potential economic pressures. With ongoing monitoring and potential policy adjustments, there is hope for economic stabilization and sustained affordability across various sectors.
