The 2024 Boeing Apple Cup concluded with Washington State edging out Washington 24-19 in a closely contested match at Lumen Field on Saturday. This victory marks only the third time since 2008 that Washington State has claimed the Apple Cup title.
The matchup at Seattle’s Lumen Field was part of a five-year agreement to maintain the rivalry following conference realignments, resulting in a crowd dominated by Washington supporters in purple over Washington State’s crimson.
Washington quarterback Will Rogers showcased his skills by throwing for 314 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Giles Jackson contributed significantly with eight receptions for 162 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. However, Washington’s inability to capitalize on red zone opportunities ultimately hurt their chances, as they settled for field goals on three occasions inside Washington State’s 25-yard line.
In the closing moments, after retrieving possession at their own 31-yard line with less than four minutes remaining, Rogers connected with Jackson for a 45-yard gain. The Huskies advanced to the Washington State 10-yard line, but faced a crucial third-and-goal. Denzel Boston was pushed back to the 1-yard line, setting up a fourth-and-goal situation.
During the final play, Washington opted for an option play to the short side, but Jonah Coleman was halted for a 2-yard loss. Coleman finished the game with 75 rushing yards on 14 attempts.
Kicker Grady Gross was perfect on the day, making all four of his field goal attempts, setting new career highs with distances of 44, 42, 24, and 43 yards.
Giles Jackson achieved a significant milestone with 101 receiving yards in the first half, marking his second career game with over 100 yards. Washington will be looking to bounce back as they prepare to open their Big Ten play against Northwestern next Saturday at 4 p.m., with tickets available for fans.
