In an announcement from Washington, D.C., the District Government will alter its operational hours for the holiday season, closing early at 2 PM on December 24 and fully observing Christmas Day on December 25. Essential services will remain available despite the changes.

During this period, all low-barrier shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness will remain open, ensuring continuous support and care for those in need throughout the holiday. Shelters such as the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter and the Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter will operate 24 hours on both days.

Essential services will include the Downtown Day Services Center, which will welcome guests on December 24 and 25 without appointments. The DC Department of Behavioral Health will also provide mental health support, available for residents who need to talk or seek assistance during the holiday.

In terms of public services, the DC Department of Public Works will not collect household trash or recycling on Christmas Day, with collections sliding to resume the next day. Various construction activities will be paused on December 25, ensuring a smoother holiday experience for residents.

Most public libraries, schools, and recreational facilities will be closed on December 25, with limited operations on December 24, after which they will reopen on December 26.

As this holiday season unfolds, it’s heartening to see the commitment of the District Government to maintain essential services for the community, especially for the most vulnerable populations. This dedication reflects a broader spirit of support and care, ensuring that no one is left behind during the holidays. Community members are encouraged to reach out for help when needed, emphasizing the importance of support and connection during this season.

In summary, Washington D.C.’s services over the Christmas holiday will be limited but remain focused on ensuring critical support for those who need it the most, showcasing a commitment to community welfare.
