Warriors’ Win: Markworth Shines in Women’s Basketball Victory

The Winona State women’s basketball team secured a solid 58-48 victory against Minnesota State University Moorhead, with standout performances from key players. Hailey Markworth emerged as the top scorer for the Warriors, contributing 23 points on an impressive 56% shooting from the field, while also leading the team in rebounds with 11.

The match showcased a competitive back-and-forth dynamic, particularly in the first half, where Winona State ended the first quarter with a slim 17-13 lead. In the second quarter, Markworth’s scoring prowess continued to shine as she hit a three-pointer followed by a jump shot just before halftime, giving WSU a 34-27 advantage at the break.

The third quarter was marked by consistent exchanges of points, but Markworth capped it off with another jump shot, stretching the Warriors’ lead to 48-38. The fourth quarter saw Winona State maintain control, with further scoring from Mattie Schimenz and Sadie Jarmolowicz, ultimately leading to their victory.

In addition to Markworth’s exceptional performance, Schimenz and Markworth each recorded two assists, while Megan Schuman, Olivia Gamoke, and Markworth were all credited with one steal. On the defensive end, Jarmolowicz led the team with one block.

The team demonstrated solid shooting statistics, going 22-50 (44%) from the field compared to MSUM’s 20-57 (35.1%) and hitting 71.4% from the free throw line. The Warriors also dominated the boards with 37 total rebounds, compared to the Dragons’ 29.

Winona State will look to build on this victory as they prepare to face St. Cloud State University on the road on February 22nd, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM at Halenbeck Hall. This upcoming match promises to be another exciting challenge for the Warriors as they continue their season.
