Kerr commented during a recent appearance on the Tom Tolbert Show, stating, “All you have to do is look at some of these teams out there that have given up the world for a star player and now they’re looking around like the Clippers, no picks. Phoenix, no picks. Milwaukee, no picks. You can really paint yourself into a corner if you’re risky and irresponsible.”
The Warriors, who currently hold an 18-16 record, are expected to consider trades as they aim to maximize the remaining prime years of superstar Steph Curry. One potential player on the trade block is forward Jonathan Kuminga, who has previously been linked to the Suns.
Despite having dealt away draft picks in the Kevin Durant trade, the Suns are faring slightly better this season, currently holding a 19-14 record. Their strategic maneuvers, including regaining some draft assets through trades like Durant’s move to Houston, demonstrate a commitment to improving their roster. They have notably transformed from a team projected to win around 30 games to a legitimate contender for the postseason.
Conversely, the Clippers find themselves in a much more challenging situation at 12-21, highlighting the risks associated with aggressive trading strategies. Kerr’s critiques, however, are not a reflection on the Suns’ current coaching staff. He praised first-year coach Jordan Ott, commending the organization and effectiveness of their gameplay, which has allowed players like Devin Booker to thrive.
