Warriors' Summer League Sparkles, But Is a Chess Tournament the Right Move?

Warriors’ Summer League Sparkles, But Is a Chess Tournament the Right Move?

The Golden State Warriors’ Summer League team has demonstrated some encouraging signs with a roster primarily led by fresh talent, including newly drafted players Will Richard and Alex Toohey. They have secured victories in two out of their first three games, notably showcasing their potential during a recent 96-84 win against the Memphis Grizzlies, where Richard scored 12 points with an impressive shooting percentage of 62.5%.

However, the team’s capabilities could be further enhanced by the presence of second-year center Quinten Post, who has opted to participate in a chess tournament instead of joining the Summer League. Organized by former MVP Derrick Rose, this event allowed Post to engage with prominent figures in the chess world, including world champion Magnus Carlsen, in what he described as a unique competitive environment.

Post shared insights about his experiences, contrasting the expectations in chess against those on an NBA court. He expressed admiration for Carlsen, likening him to basketball’s top players, saying, “Probably the greatest to ever do it… he’s like a Curry or like a LeBron of the chess world.”

While Post’s decision to miss the Summer League may reflect a different developmental approach by the Warriors, it contrasts with the intentions of the Summer League, which typically aims to allow young players to shine and gain vital experience. Other sophomores, like Kal’el Ware of the Miami Heat and Yves Missi with the Pelicans, have seized the opportunity to showcase their skills effectively.

Although the chess tournament offers Post a valuable experience, his absence certainly highlights an underutilized opportunity for growth within the Warriors’ roster during this important developmental period. With other young talents rising to the challenge, Post’s return to the team could prove crucial for the Warriors as they cultivate their future stars.
