Warriors Soar in Season Opener: A Night of Triumph at West Point!

WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Warriors and Lady Warriors enjoyed a triumphant evening as they hosted Hanceville in their season home openers at Jim Boyd Gymnasium on Tuesday night, securing victory in both contests. The Lady Warriors overcame a slow start to dominate the second half, outscoring Hanceville 30-8 and finalizing the game with a 59-35 win. In the boys’ matchup, Maddox Chapman was a standout performer, scoring 33 points as the Warriors triumphed over the Bulldogs with a score of 73-47.

Before the girls’ game, Lady Warriors Head Coach John Welborn was honored for achieving an impressive milestone: his 200th victory at West Point, recorded during a prior game against Holly Pond. Following Tuesday’s win, Welborn now holds a stellar career record of 201 wins and 104 losses.

In the boys’ game, Drake Bentley of Hanceville initially led the way with a three-pointer and a couple of free throws, giving his team a brief 5-2 advantage. However, Maddox Chapman quickly turned the tide for West Point, making key plays and contributing to their lead. The game saw competitive exchanges, but the Warriors constructed a significant lead with a 9-0 scoring run, ending the first half with a comfortable 30-20 advantage.

West Point maintained their momentum into the third quarter, where Chapman dominated the court, and the team built a solid lead. The final quarter saw strong performances, particularly from Chapman, leading to a decisive 73-47 victory.

In the girls’ game, after a closely contested opening, the Warriors pulled ahead just before halftime, leading 29-25. The decisive moment came in the third quarter when the Lady Warriors, fueled by outstanding performances from Jaelyn and Camryn Faulkner, surged ahead with a commanding 47-28 lead. The team finished strong, securing a 59-35 win with Camryn Faulkner topping the score sheet with 20 points.

Moving forward, West Point will be back in action at home against Fairview, while Hanceville prepares for an away game against Oneonta on Thursday. The wins mark a strong start for both West Point squads, showcasing their resilience and teamwork.
