Warriors Snap Losing Streak with Nail-Biting Win over Beaver Local

West Branch’s boys basketball team secured a much-needed victory against Beaver Local, triumphing 58-55 in a closely contested match on Tuesday. This win came after a challenging stretch, where the Warriors lost six out of their last seven games. Head Coach Scott Loudon emphasized the significance of this win, stating, “We needed something like this,” especially with several league games looming ahead.

With the victory, West Branch improved its record to 5-8, while Beaver Local saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, bringing their record to 8-3. The game was characterized by a back-and-forth battle, with key performances from both teams.

Jeremiah Thomas played a crucial role for West Branch, making a decisive jumper with 41 seconds remaining that put the Warriors ahead 55-54. Camden Lane, who topped the scoring chart for West Branch with 17 points, added a free throw, extending the lead to 56-54. In the closing seconds, despite a valiant effort to tie the game, Beaver Local’s Luke Rettos was only able to make one of two free throws, and Thomas sealed the victory by converting two free throws after being fouled.

Beaver Local’s head coach, Nick Miller, reflected on the loss, noting the team’s youth and the learning experience it provided. With only two seniors on the squad, Miller remains optimistic that these tough games will aid in their development, stating, “Sometimes you have to lose a game like this to win a few more down the road.”

Owen Hill had an impressive game for Beaver Local, scoring 22 points, and was effectively challenged by West Branch’s post players, including Cooper Anderson and Zach Coffee. Without their top player, Gavin Gregory, sidelined due to injury, West Branch had to rely on teamwork and depth.

The first half saw Beaver Local take an early lead before West Branch rallied to tie the game. Key contributions from Thomas and Joey Jackson helped shift the momentum in the Warriors’ favor as they entered the final quarter ahead. Loudon praised his players for stepping up, particularly highlighting Thomas’s performance in critical moments, including his late-game free throws.

In addition to the varsity win, West Branch’s junior varsity team also prevailed, defeating Beaver Local 54-50, showcasing the strength of the Warriors’ basketball program.

Looking ahead, West Branch will face Minerva on Friday, while Beaver Local will host Oak Glen on the same day. This win not only boosts the Warriors’ morale but also sets a hopeful tone as they prepare for upcoming league challenges. The importance of perseverance and teamwork is evident, and both teams will undoubtedly use these experiences to strengthen their game as the season progresses.
