The North Union Warriors boys basketball team, under the veteran leadership of 11th-year head coach Alex Fisher, is gearing up for a challenging season as they work to find their rhythm. Following a successful 14-2 campaign that secured a second-place finish in the Top of Iowa Conference, the Warriors now face a rebuilt roster with several players stepping into varsity roles for the first time.
Head coach Fisher has identified the team’s lack of varsity experience as a significant hurdle, especially after the graduation of five starters and the injury of their sixth man. “We basically are starting with zero minutes of varsity experience from our returning starters,” he noted.
Among those with some experience are juniors Khael Jones and Drew Henderson, who both played in varsity games last season and are now tasked with helping their teammates adjust to the higher level of play. The team is currently navigating a short bench due to injuries, a challenge they managed to overcome in their season opener, securing a 66-48 victory over West Bend-Mallard.
Fisher emphasizes the importance of team cohesion at this stage, stating, “It’s more about just gelling together right now.” The Warriors are experimenting with different lineups, including playing with two centers, Lane Bruin and Cole Nixon, to maximize their offensive potential.
Despite the challenges, Fisher remains optimistic about the team’s shooting capabilities. He believes in their ability to hit three-pointers and praises the strength of their guards, including Cale Jones and Grayson Kovrov, who play crucial roles in creating offensive opportunities.
As the Warriors embrace their development as a unit, Fisher maintains a daily focus on improvement. He hopes to have key players such as Drew Henderson and Grady Madden back in action after the holiday break. The goal is to position themselves in the top tiers of the conference standings.
Fisher acknowledges that while early season injuries are taxing the roster, he is confident in his team’s resilience and aspirations for a strong second half of the season. “We’re hoping to make a nice run come January and February,” he said, as the Warriors prepare for their next matchup against North Iowa on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In summary, the North Union Warriors are rallying to build a cohesive team despite early setbacks, focusing on individual growth and team performance. With the right adjustments and returning players, there’s a hopeful outlook for the season ahead.
