The North Union Warriors boys basketball team, under the leadership of 11th-year head coach Alex Fisher, is eager to establish its rhythm as they embark on a new season. After finishing with an impressive 14-2 record last year, which earned them a second-place spot in the Top of Iowa Conference, the Warriors are embracing a revamped roster filled with players who are new to the varsity level.
Coach Fisher cites the primary challenge this season as the team’s lack of experience, especially after graduating five starters from last year’s squad. Additionally, injuries to key players off the bench have further complicated preparations. “Basically, we are bringing back zero minutes of varsity experience from our starting guys,” Fisher stated.
Nevertheless, the team retains some crucial experience in juniors Khael Jones and Drew Henderson, who both logged minutes in varsity games last season. With a short bench due to injuries, the Warriors have had to adapt their gameplay. In a recent nonconference match against West Bend-Mallard, they managed to secure a convincing win with a score of 66-48, marking their entry into the season with a 1-0 record.
Fisher highlighted the importance of building team chemistry and emphasized that the focus has been more on how well the players can work together as a unit rather than strictly on individual minutes played. He noted the team’s experimentation with a three-guard offense due to current injuries.
Fisher expressed confidence in his team’s shooting abilities, believing they can develop a strong offensive strategy. “Overall, we’re a pretty good shooting team,” he remarked, noting that they have multiple players capable of hitting three-point shots, which could be a significant asset this season.
The Warriors’ main goal remains consistent: to improve every day. Fisher’s aspirations include a hope to have injured players Drew Henderson and Grady Madden back after the holiday break, significantly enhancing the team’s competitiveness within the conference.
Despite early setbacks and injuries, Fisher maintains optimism about overcoming these challenges. He believes that as players gain experience and return from injury, the team will be well-equipped to make a serious push in the later part of the season.
The Warriors are set to face North Iowa next, a highly anticipated game scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the North Iowa Community High School Gym, as they continue their journey in pursuit of success this season.
