Democratic Vice Presidential nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz visited Winston-Salem on Thursday, October 17, for a campaign rally coinciding with the start of early voting in North Carolina. The event took place at Carver High School and featured appearances by Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough and rapper Common, among others.
Hundreds of supporters from the Triad area and beyond gathered to hear Walz speak. Attendees expressed their enthusiasm for his campaign. “I love the energy that he brings and the policies he has implemented as governor of Minnesota,” said Dennis Malloy, a rally participant.
One voter, a registered Republican, indicated his support for Walz and running mate Kamala Harris, citing a focus on helping small businesses as a key reason for his decision. “One of her core values is always building up the small businesses and the middle class,” said Tremayne Blair.
In his address, Governor Walz acknowledged those affected by Hurricane Helene and spent considerable time discussing economic policies. He highlighted plans for affordable homeownership, Medicare expansion, and measures to curb price gouging. He also pledged tax cuts for 100 million middle-class Americans as part of Harris’s economic strategy.
Walz further addressed abortion rights and responded to Republican candidate for North Carolina Governor Mark Robinson’s controversial views on abortion laws, pledging that Harris would support legislation to codify Roe v. Wade.
He concluded his speech by urging supporters to take advantage of early voting, reminding them that just 19 days remain until Election Day, and expressed anticipation for more campaign events throughout the state.
