Democratic Vice Presidential nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz visited Winston-Salem on Thursday, October 17, to campaign as early voting commenced in North Carolina. The event took place at Carver High School and featured attendees like Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough and rapper Common, drawing hundreds of supporters from the Triad region and beyond.
Some attendees expressed their enthusiasm for Walz. Dennis Malloy highlighted the governor’s positive energy and effective policies in Minnesota. Another voter, Tremayne Blair, a registered Republican, indicated his support for Harris and Walz, citing a focus on small businesses and the middle class.
During his speech, Walz paid tribute to those affected by Hurricane Helene and discussed several economic policies, such as affordable homeownership, expanding Medicare, and lowering costs. He promised tax cuts for 100 million middle-class Americans as part of Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic strategy, alongside commitments to regulate price gouging.
Walz also addressed abortion rights and criticized Lt. Governor Mark Robinson’s extreme views on the issue, assuring that Harris would sign legislation to codify Roe v. Wade into law.
He concluded by urging supporters to vote early, with only 19 days remaining until election day, and indicated that more campaign stops in the state are anticipated to encourage voter participation.
