Walmart Inc. has officially announced that John Furner will take over as President and Chief Executive Officer of the company starting February 1, 2026. This transition follows the retirement of Doug McMillon, who has led Walmart since 2014 and will remain on the Board of Directors to assist in the transition until the next annual shareholder meeting.
Furner, who is currently the President and CEO of Walmart U.S., has been with the retail giant since 1993. His extensive experience spans various leadership roles within the company, including his previous position as President and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S. Under his leadership, Walmart U.S. has thrived, reflecting his commitment to associate development, digital transformation, and operational excellence.
Greg Penner, Chairman of Walmart Inc., expressed confidence in Furner’s ability to guide the company into its forthcoming phase of growth and innovation. He emphasized Furner’s deep understanding of the business, which he has gained through over 30 years of diverse experience within the organization. Penner acknowledged the impact of McMillon’s leadership, noting his successful initiatives in enhancing associate engagement, strengthening digital operations, and modernizing supply chain logistics.
Reflecting on his time as CEO, McMillon expressed gratitude to the Board and the Walton family, highlighting the achievements of Walmart’s associates and their dedication to customers and communities. He voiced his complete faith in Furner’s leadership abilities, citing his passion for the company and commitment to its values, which are critical for navigating the challenges posed by the evolving retail landscape, including an increased emphasis on artificial intelligence.
As Walmart prepares for this leadership change, there is a sense of optimism for the future under Furner’s guidance. The groundwork laid by McMillon sets the stage for continued innovation and sustained growth. With a strong focus on both digital and human capital, Walmart appears well-positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven market.
