Louisville’s running backs Braxton Jennings and Shaun Boykins played pivotal roles in the Cardinals’ dominant victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, securing a 41-0 win on Saturday. This triumph marks Louisville’s second consecutive win against Kentucky, a significant milestone as it represents the program’s first winning streak against their rivals since racking up five straight victories from 2011 to 2015.
Entering the Governor’s Cup, Louisville’s running back depth seemed bleak, with all four scholarship running backs unavailable, leaving running backs coach Chris Barclay in a challenging position. However, in a surprising turn of events, walk-on Braxton Jennings and wide receiver-turned-running back Shaun Boykins rose to the occasion. The duo showcased their talents, combining for an impressive 214 rushing yards against Kentucky’s defense.
This victory is particularly noteworthy as it is the Cardinals’ largest margin of victory over the Wildcats to date and the first shutout against Kentucky since 2004. Defensive lineman Clev Lubin made significant contributions on defense with two sacks and four total tackles, while safety D’Angelo Hutchinson recorded ten tackles, marking his second consecutive game reaching double-digit tackles. Cornerback Tayon Holloway also impressed with two interceptions.
Jennings, who had limited recruitment options coming out of Ashland Blazer High School, decided to walk on at Louisville this year. Prior to the game, he had gained only 87 rushing yards throughout the season but broke out with a career-high 113 yards against Kentucky, making history as the first walk-on in the program to achieve such a feat.
Terrence McWilliams contributed to the early lead by recovering a blocked punt, which Jennings helped set up with crucial runs that led to a touchdown from quarterback Miller Moss. Moss ended the season with nine rushing touchdowns, tied for the sixth-most in Louisville quarterback history.
Boykins, who started his collegiate career as a receiver, transitioned to running back this season under Barclay’s guidance. He made a notable mark in the rivalry game with 101 rushing yards, scoring his first career touchdown on a 5-yard run in the third quarter, expanding the lead to 27-0.
With the season concluded, Louisville is now set to await the announcement of its bowl game destination on December 7. Current projections suggest possibilities including the Mayo Bowl, Gasparilla Bowl, and Fenway Bowl, providing an opportunity for the Cardinals to build on the momentum from this impressive victory.
