The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has revealed a significant update to its service procedure, set to take effect on Monday, September 29, 2025. In a bid to enhance efficiency, the ministry will no longer accept walk-in customers, requiring all applicants to schedule appointments in advance. This strategic shift is designed to optimize operations and improve the overall experience for applicants.
In a statement, Aliki Salusalu, the Permanent Secretary for Immigration, specified that exceptions to the no walk-in policy will be made for urgent applications under certain circumstances. These include medical emergencies, official travel, academic pursuits, employment, and cases involving returning Fijian citizens or permanent residence (PR) holders. All urgent applications must be accompanied by the necessary supporting documentation to qualify for an exception.
As part of the new procedure, passport enrolments and collections will remain available from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Mr. Salusalu emphasized that the new system aims to deliver a more seamless experience for all applicants, thereby enhancing service quality.
The announcement aligns with a recent advisory by the Fiji Immigration Department which highlighted an increase in online appointment slots for passport applications. Mason Smith, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Immigration, reassured the public about the ample availability of passports, urging against unnecessary rushes for appointments unless in emergencies.
This progressive move towards an appointment-based system represents the department’s dedication to improving operational performance. It is expected to ensure faster and more dependable service for applicants. Citizens are encouraged to make the most of the online booking system to organize their appointments efficiently and prepare adequately for urgent situations. Ultimately, this initiative by the Ministry is not only aimed at boosting efficiency but also at delivering a more streamlined and trouble-free service for Fijians.
