Vucevic Urges Bulls to Amp Up Defense After Pelicans Loss

NEW ORLEANS — After a lackluster performance against the two-win Pelicans on Monday, center Nikola Vucevic expressed his frustration with the Chicago Bulls’ effort on defense. Following a narrow one-point victory over the struggling Wizards, Vucevic did not hold back in a postgame interview, emphasizing the need for urgency and physicality on the court. His annoyance was compounded by teammate Jalen Smith’s lighthearted antics during the interview, which Vucevic dismissed, clearly not in the mood for jokes.

During their recent game against the Pelicans, the Bulls’ performance reflected the issues highlighted by Vucevic. The team, now standing at 9-8, lost 143-130 after failing to match the intensity necessary to compete effectively. Coach Billy Donovan echoed Vucevic’s sentiments, acknowledging the gap between experienced players and younger teammates. “Vooch is a really smart player,” Donovan said. “You can win games in this league and be going in the wrong direction… That’s what Vooch’s point was, that that is not sustainable.”

The Bulls struggled from the very start of the game, allowing the Pelicans, who typically score the fewest points in the league, to take a commanding lead. Chicago was outrebounded 55-33 overall, including a dismal 9-2 on offensive rebounds in the first half. Second-year forward Matas Buzelis recognized Vucevic’s right to be upset and acknowledged the team needed to step up their game.

Despite a late-game effort that saw guard Coby White narrowing the lead to eight points, the Bulls never mounted a serious challenge to regain the lead. Ayo Dosunmu, who led the team with 28 points, commented on the team’s struggles with boxing out and maintaining physicality throughout the game. “We keep saying the stove is hot, and we keep touching the stove,” remarked Dosunmu, highlighting the consistency of their issues despite repeated coaching instructions.

With the Bulls needing to find a way to improve their performance, especially in rebounding and physical execution, there is hope that they can turn things around by acknowledging and addressing these critical shortcomings. As the team works through its challenges, the insights from veteran players like Vucevic could prove crucial in guiding their path forward.
