Robbinsdale School District Seniors Register to Vote
Tuesday marked National Voter Registration Day, and a local organization is directing its outreach towards the upcoming generation.
In Robbinsdale Area Schools, voting registration booths were set up in the cafeterias of both Cooper and Armstrong High Schools. At Armstrong, Nancy Intermill and fellow volunteers attracted students with a colorful booth filled with stickers and snacks.
As students approached, Intermill inquired about their voter registration status. Students aged 16 and older are eligible to pre-register, while those who are 18 or older can register on the spot.
“It’s important to make them aware of the opportunities available if they stay informed about civic matters,” Intermill stated.
As the voter services chair of the League of Women Voters of Crystal-New Hope-East Plymouth-Robbinsdale, a nonpartisan organization advocating for increased voter participation, Intermill emphasized, “When people are registered to vote, it becomes a part of their mindset. That’s what democracy is all about.”
The event highlighted the future electorate, with students like Ari White, who recently turned 18, expressing enthusiasm about participating in the upcoming elections.
“I’m thrilled. I’ve been researching the candidates extensively,” Ari shared. She credited her parents with instilling the significance of voting in her. Ari expressed her desire for her friends to also register.
“Voting is a privilege and an incredible right we have in America,” she said. “In other countries, people often lack the chance to influence their communities and governances.”
Robbinsdale Superintendent Teri Staloch visited the booth and remarked on the students’ engagement with the initiative. “We aim to empower them to understand that their voices count,” Staloch noted.
Additionally, the district took part in a live virtual event hosted by the Minnesota Secretary of State, which was accessible to students from Robbinsdale Academy-Highview and Robbinsdale Virtual Academy.
Minnesota also allows same-day voter registration. For further details on voting, registration, and polling locations, Minnesotans can visit the Secretary of State’s website.
