The Athlete of the Week contest is back for its third year, continuing to engage the Vicksburg community in celebrating local sports talent. Each Sunday, four athletes will be nominated for the title, with voting open to readers and anyone who wants to participate.
The nominees primarily come from high schools in Warren County, but athletes from surrounding areas such as Tallulah and Port Gibson, as well as those playing at the youth and college levels, are also eligible. A variety of sports will be acknowledged, following a successful prior year in which there were 32 winners from eight different sports.
The 2024-25 contest kicks off this Sunday and runs through early May, excluding a short break during the holiday season. Over the past two years, the initiative has recorded more than 100,000 votes, and hopes are high to exceed that number this year.
Voting will take place from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday at midnight each week, allowing supporters to cast multiple votes for their favorite athletes. The aim is not only to generate excitement around local sports but also to build a sense of community through this interactive feature.
The contest is designed to spotlight and recognize the hard work of local athletes, and the organizers are grateful for the community’s continued support in making it a success.
