Volunteers Tap Josh Elander to Lead Tennessee Baseball

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee has appointed Josh Elander as the new head coach of the Volunteers baseball team, marking an exciting new chapter following the departure of Tony Vitello, who has taken a position with the San Francisco Giants. The quick selection of Elander underscores the confidence that the university’s administration has in his capabilities, as stated by Vice Chancellor and Athletics Director Danny White.

“From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice,” White remarked. He highlighted Elander’s relentless commitment as a factor that has played a significant role in transforming Tennessee baseball into a formidable program. White added that the university looks forward to continuing its pursuit of championships under Elander’s leadership.

Elander, who has been part of the Tennessee baseball program for eight seasons, will be entering his ninth year. He was elevated to associate head coach in 2022, a position he assumed after an impressive season that set multiple records for the Vols. His contributions have been vital in establishing Tennessee baseball as a nationally recognized force.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Elander said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top. I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here. The hunt continues, and we’re still excited. Love this place and these people. So thankful for the best that’s yet to come.”

Before his coaching career, Elander had a notable playing history, having been named the Atlanta Braves’ Minor League Player of the Year while advancing through their system. He also played in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system before transitioning to coaching.

With Elander at the helm, fans and players alike are optimistic about the future of Tennessee baseball, hoping to build on the strong foundation already laid and attract further success on the diamond.
