J.P. Estrella, forward for the Tennessee basketball team, exited the game against Rice on November 17 due to a left leg injury and will not return as announced by the team at halftime.
The incident occurred when Estrella, after contending for a rebound near the rim, inadvertently fell backward after losing the ball. Rice’s forward Stephen Giwa landed on Estrella’s lower leg during the fall. Reacting quickly to the injury, Estrella immediately clutched his knee and was seen in visible distress near the free-throw line. Team trainer Chad Newman tended to him as his teammates gathered around. Guard Ethan Burg remained by his side while he was evaluated. Ultimately, Estrella was assisted off the court, displaying some ability to put weight on his left leg.
The 6-foot-11 player from Maine has been a standout in the early season for the No. 17 Vols, averaging an impressive 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds over the first three games. Up until his injury, he had contributed four points against Rice with just 1:26 left in the first half.
Unfortunately, injuries have been a recurring issue in Estrella’s career at Tennessee. He saw limited action last season, participating in only three games after undergoing season-ending surgery on his left foot in November. He also faced ankle troubles during the preseason but kicked off this season with strong performances, including a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double against North Florida on November 12 and significant contributions against Northern Kentucky and Mercer in earlier games.
Tennessee’s frontcourt depth has been vital this season, with Estrella at the forefront of their offensive efforts. The team boasts a solid five-man rotation that includes Estrella, senior Felix Okpara, juniors Jaylen Carey and Cade Phillips, and freshman DeWayne Brown II.
As the Vols navigate this challenging early season, fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for Estrella, whose presence has proven to be pivotal for the team’s performance on the court.
