For many young people in Fiji, the future can feel uncertain amid various challenges. However, a determined faith-based organization is actively working to shift this narrative. This week, at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva, the Voice of Youth launched its first significant public event—a youth-driven health expo that brought together young individuals, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community leaders.

Described as a pilot project, the event aimed to foster collaboration among NGOs focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and positive living among Fiji’s youth. Poasa Batiratu, the executive chairperson of Voice of Youth and chief organizer of the event, emphasized the organization’s commitment to mobilizing and empowering young people through targeted, community-centric initiatives.

“Our youths are often on a path of destruction,” Batiratu remarked, underscoring the urgent need for early intervention and positive engagement. The organization aims not just to spread information, but to actively involve youth in constructive activities that instill a sense of purpose.

Participating NGOs provided essential health and social information while also offering training opportunities for young people to engage meaningfully in public service. “We have about 100 volunteers on the ground, and they are all youths,” Batiratu noted, highlighting the involvement of the younger generation in these efforts.

Since its inception less than a year ago, Voice of Youth has seen significant growth, with an increasing number of young individuals participating in its programs. The training initiatives focus on equipping participants with practical, transferable skills, including data interpretation and conducting consultations.

Additionally, the organization has conducted awareness sessions covering critical social issues such as mental health, drug awareness, and HIV/AIDS, featuring insights from experts like Police Inspector Donu and psychologist Leba Kania.

The successful expo lays a strong groundwork for Voice of Youth’s mission to cultivate resilient, informed, and engaged young leaders. Ambitious plans are in place to expand their initiatives nationwide by the end of the year, signaling a hopeful movement that promises to support a brighter future for the youth of Fiji, equipping them with the necessary tools and encouragement to succeed.
