For many young individuals in Fiji, the future appears uncertain, with some already facing significant challenges. However, a small yet determined faith-based organization is working to change that narrative. This week, at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva, the Voice of Youth held its inaugural major public event, a youth-driven health expo that brought together young people, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders.
Characterized as a pilot project, the event aimed to unite various NGOs dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles and positive living among the youth of Fiji. The executive chairperson of the Voice of Youth and chief event organizer, Poasa Batiratu, expressed the organization’s commitment to mobilizing and empowering young people through targeted, community-focused initiatives.
“Our youths are often on a path of destruction,” Mr. Batiratu noted, highlighting the urgent necessity for early intervention and positive engagement. The organization’s objective extends beyond merely disseminating information; its goal is to engage youth in beneficial activities that provide them with a sense of purpose.
The participating NGOs shared vital health and social information while also offering training opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to public service. “We have about 100 volunteers on the ground, and they are all youths,” Mr. Batiratu shared.
Since its establishment less than a year ago, Voice of Youth has experienced substantial growth, with an increasing number of youths participating in its programs. The training initiatives equip participants with practical, transferable skills, including how to interpret data and conduct consultations.
In addition to skills development, the organization has been hosting awareness sessions focused on pressing social issues such as mental health, drug awareness, and HIV/AIDS, featuring talks from experts including Police Inspector Donu and psychologist Leba Kania.
The successful expo sets a strong foundation for Voice of Youth’s mission to nurture resilient, informed, and engaged young leaders, with ambitious plans to expand their initiatives nationwide by the end of the year. This positive movement promises to foster a brighter future for the youth in Fiji, providing them with essential tools and support to thrive.
