Vito the Pug: The Unexpected Champion of the 2024 National Dog Show!

A remarkable pug named Vito captured the title of Best in Show at the 2024 National Dog Show, a prestigious annual competition that aired following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28. Vito, characterized by his charming “perfect pug mug,” was handled by Michael Scott from Chesapeake City, Maryland, who appeared on TODAY alongside Vito and the show’s longtime host, David Frei.

Frei highlighted Vito’s distinct personality, exclaiming that he truly “owns the ground he stands on” and has a fantastic attitude. Vito resides with Carolyn Koch in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and celebrated his win with his favorite meal, showcasing the joy of competition.

Scott emphasized the importance of maintaining Vito’s health, mentioning that a healthy diet and regular exercise, including sessions on a Trotter, played a crucial role in preparing for the event. Vito is no stranger to the dog show scene, holding the title of the No. 2 toy dog in America and boasting an impressive record with 25 Best in Show victories across approximately 75 all-breed shows. Judge George Milutinovich praised Vito’s compact features and overall movement, saying, “Wow. Just wow. Lots of dog in a small package.”

The competition was presented by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, featuring about 2,000 dogs from 205 breeds. The selection process involved judges picking a Best in Group winner from each of the seven groups — sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding. Ultimately, Vito’s exceptional charisma earned him the coveted title, along with a $20,000 prize.

This year, Verde, a Welsh Terrier, secured the Reserve Best in Show position, while other group winners included a Clumber Spaniel named Houston in the sporting category, a Giant Schnauzer named Monty in working, an Ibizan Hound named The Zit in hound, a Berger Picard named Rupert in herding, and a Lhasa Apso named JJ in non-sporting.

The 2024 event was hosted by John O’Hurley from “Seinfeld,” alongside NBC Sports analyst Mary Carillo and David Frei, showcasing an exciting celebration for dog lovers everywhere.
