Virmi Vakatawa has officially joined the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, completing the team’s roster for the upcoming 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. His addition has ended months of speculation and underscores a significant moment in his rugby career. Vakatawa, a former French international and European Player of the Year, has been training diligently with the Drua in New Zealand as they prepare for their pre-season match today.

In an exclusive interview with Times Sport at the team’s camp in Ngamuwhaine Lodge, Tauranga, Vakatawa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Drua. “I’m so blessed to be part of the Drua for this new season,” he said, reflecting on his journey which began with his involvement in the Naitasiri senior men’s team during last year’s Skipper Cup.

Vakatawa’s entry into Super Rugby marks a significant milestone in his career, one he has long anticipated. He reminisced about watching Super 12 and Super 14 matches and acknowledged the high skill level of players participating in the current Super Rugby format. His experience in France has further highlighted the competitive edge that Super Rugby players carry, especially those transitioning into European leagues.

Returning to Fiji signifies a fresh start for Vakatawa, who has overcome various challenges on his journey. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “The journey I’ve been through, it’s been tough and I want to give thanks to the Lord for coming with me and leading me throughout the journey from France.”

His teammates are equally enthusiastic about his arrival. Tuidraki Samusamuvodre shared his excitement, noting the impressive experience Vakatawa brings to the team. “I’m excited to play again with him, especially with his CV coming along,” Samusamuvodre stated, emphasizing the benefit of having such a seasoned player in the squad.

Fijian Drua general manager Shane Hussein echoed these sentiments, stating that Vakatawa is eager to make a meaningful impact on the team. “He is hungry to make a positive contribution to the Drua both on and off the field using his wealth of experience and exceptional skill set,” Hussein remarked.

As the Fijian Drua prepares to take on the Chiefs in their pre-season trial match at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui today at 2 PM, the addition of Vakatawa promises to enhance the team’s dynamics and performance. The excitement surrounding his inclusion reflects optimism and a hopeful outlook for the upcoming season.
