Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has emphasized that the government is dedicated to prioritizing the interests of landowners during its infrastructure initiatives. The coalition government is focused on ensuring equitable compensation and community benefits are integral to its operations.
Current discussions are ongoing with the Viria landowners in Naitasiri, who have previously sought $9 million, including requests for consistent water supply across five villages and the rehabilitation of roads as part of the Viria Water Project. In response to these demands, Tuisawau highlighted that new measures will be introduced to improve water connections, roads, and community facilities. He stated, “The government owes a lot to the province and we have to make more effort to address some of their concerns like infrastructure, for example, here in Colo-i-Suva.”
Before any upgrades to water supply and roadwork can begin this financial year, Tuisawau pointed out the importance of establishing water royalty agreements. He recognized the significant contributions made by the Naitasiri province, which has provided crucial land for essential water and electricity projects, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation that would elevate local living standards.
This approach is part of the government’s wider strategy to enhance essential services while nurturing positive relationships with landowners. By focusing on both infrastructure improvement and compensation issues, the coalition government is taking significant strides toward fostering community development and ensuring local interests are prioritized. As these efforts unfold, there is a hopeful outlook for better living conditions and strengthened partnerships between the government and the communities it serves.
