A Virginia man named Brendan Banfield has taken the stand in his own defense during his trial for the alleged murders of his wife, Christine Banfield, and another man, Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors have charged Banfield with aggravated murder, asserting that he orchestrated a sinister plan involving an affair with the family’s au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, to eliminate his wife in February 2023. If found guilty, he faces life in prison.
Throughout the proceedings, Banfield has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His defense contends that prosecutors have manipulated evidence to construct a misleading narrative against him. The prosecution alleges that Banfield conspired with Peres Magalhães to use a fetish website to pose as Christine and lure Ryan into a trap, ultimately aiming to present Ryan as a perpetrator of the violence.
During his recent testimony, Banfield openly admitted to having an affair with Peres Magalhães that began in August 2022. He stressed that his infidelity did not signal a desire to end his marriage, nor did he conspire to harm his wife. “No, there was no plan,” he emphasized when questioned about the alleged conspiracy to kill Christine.
On the day of the incident, Banfield described a routine morning that included preparing for an important work meeting that could have led to a promotion. He recounted a conversation with Christopher before heading to McDonald’s for breakfast, only to receive a troubling phone call from Peres Magalhães which prompted him to return home.
Upon arrival, Banfield called 911 alongside Peres Magalhães after witnessing Ryan attacking his wife in their bedroom. In his account, he claimed he shot Ryan in defense of Christine, while Peres Magalhães used Banfield’s firearm to shoot Ryan a second time. Body camera footage from responding officers captured Banfield at the scene, attempting to apply pressure to his wife’s wounds.
Significantly, Peres Magalhães was arrested in October 2023 and later agreed to testify against Banfield in exchange for a recommendation of a lighter sentence. Her testimony painted a different picture, asserting that the crime scene was staged by Banfield, who attempted to frame Ryan for Christine’s murder.
Adding complexity to the case, crucial physical evidence points away from Banfield, as his DNA was notably absent on the knife used to fatally stab Christine. Instead, DNA found at the scene belonged to Christine and Ryan. The defense has also criticized the police investigation, claiming that digital data could disprove the prosecutors’ theory that Banfield posed as his wife.
