Five individuals have received Traffic Infringement Notices for careless driving following the circulation of a viral video that showcased their reckless behavior on Mead Road last week. The Southern Division Taskforce took swift action, conducting a raid at the Mead Road Housing complex, which led to the identification of those caught in the alarming footage.
Authorities are currently pursuing a sixth suspect who is believed to have provided false information to a rental car company. Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga stressed the ongoing nature of the investigations, insisting that all individuals responsible for this dangerous driving must be held accountable. He highlighted the risks posed by such reckless actions, underlining the police’s commitment to public safety.
In the face of criticism regarding the perceived inadequacy of police responses, Commissioner Lutunauga defended the thoroughness of the investigations, pointing out that concrete evidence must be established before any charges can be made. He cautioned against making hasty assumptions about those involved.
This incident is part of a larger initiative by the Fiji Police Force to enhance road safety, as recent months have seen an uptick in reckless driving cases. The police have actively encouraged the public to adhere to traffic regulations, seek community cooperation, and report unsafe driving behavior.
A positive aspect of this situation is the emphasis on collaboration between law enforcement and the community to promote safer road usage. By fostering a culture of responsibility among drivers, there is a hopeful potential for a decrease in reckless driving incidents, leading to greater safety for all road users in Fiji.
