A viral image circulating on social media, which depicts a contentious encounter between police officers and a local vendor, is misleading, as clarified by Nunia Kalougata, the individual at the center of the incident. The photo, taken by a bystander, led to significant online backlash, with many accusing law enforcement of harassing Kalougata, a 29-year-old mother and small business owner trying to make a living on Ratu Dovi Road in Nasinu.
In her response, Ms. Kalougata firmly stated that the events portrayed online do not reflect reality. She explained that the interactions with the officers were purely routine and part of standard procedures. For the past six years, Kalougata has been a vendor near Challengers Plaza at Laucala Beach, where she assures that her operations are in full compliance with local regulations set by the Nasinu Town Council.
“I possess a Health License to sell food and an approval letter from the property owner,” she mentioned, emphasizing her legitimacy and right to conduct business in the area. Despite the perceived “commotion” captured in the viral image, Kalougata defended the police officers, stating, “They were just doing their jobs, and in no way was their approach threatening or harassing.”
