More than 6,500 residents of Vio Island in Fiji are poised to benefit from newly commissioned clean energy solutions and robust infrastructure designed to withstand disasters. The initiative, which includes the establishment of a new evacuation center focused on risk management and the enhancement of the island’s solar mini-grid system, was inaugurated by Sakiasi Ditoka, Fiji’s Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.
During the launch event, Minister Ditoka underscored the significance of these projects, backed by the UNDP Governance for Resilient Development (Gov4Res) initiative and the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF). He remarked, “These initiatives showcase how inclusive, people-centered development can deliver tangible, sustainable outcomes for vulnerable communities.” The FREF project is anticipated to decrease CO₂ emissions by more than 2,920 metric tons while implementing innovative technologies like mobile payments and digital connectivity, which are expected to enhance the economic prospects of local residents.
The newly constructed evacuation center will utilize renewable energy, improving disaster preparedness and safety for the locals. Furthermore, the upgraded solar mini-grid system will deliver affordable and clean electricity, which is vital for economic growth and educational prospects, particularly for women and youth in the community.
The event was also attended by Peter Roberts, the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, who emphasized that the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund represents Australia’s largest single investment in off-grid renewable energy projects across the Pacific region. Delegates from various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, alongside the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), have expressed their dedication to supporting Fiji’s endeavors in renewable energy and disaster resilience.
This collaborative effort is part of a broader strategy aimed at achieving sustainable development and climate resilience in Fiji, highlighting innovative methods tailored to effectively address community needs.
