Over 6,500 Fijians are set to benefit from recently commissioned clean energy systems and disaster-resilient infrastructure on Vio Island. This initiative includes the opening of a new risk-informed evacuation center and the upgrade of the island’s solar mini-grid system, both launched by Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.
During the launch, Mr. Ditoka highlighted the importance of these programs, which are supported by the UNDP Governance for Resilient Development (Gov4Res) and the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF). He stated, “These initiatives showcase how inclusive, people-centered development can deliver tangible, sustainable outcomes for vulnerable communities.” The FREF initiative is expected to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions by over 2,920 metric tons while integrating smart technology such as mobile payments and digital connectivity, enhancing the economic potential of the community.
The new evacuation center will be powered by renewable energy, bolstering disaster readiness and safety for residents. Additionally, the upgraded solar mini-grid will provide affordable clean electricity, crucial for economic empowerment and educational opportunities, especially benefiting women and youth in the area.
Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Roberts, attended the event and noted that the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund represents Australia’s largest single investment in off-grid renewable energy in the Pacific. Representatives from various nations, including Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, as well as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), expressed their commitment to supporting Fiji’s renewable energy and disaster resilience efforts.
This collaboration reflects a broader strategy for sustainable development and climate resilience within Fiji, emphasizing innovative approaches to rural development that meet community needs effectively.
