Vinyl Vibes and Concert Thrills: My Musical Year in Review

Good morning and welcome to Fitzie’s Wrapped!

Last week, I shared my thoughts on Spotify Wrapped, expressing my frustrations. This week, I’m presenting my own version.

In previous years, I enjoyed showcasing the records I’ve purchased and the concerts I’ve attended. This year, the list is shorter due to fewer album buys, but there were still some noteworthy highlights. I was fortunate enough to attend some great concerts.

Let’s dive in!

**Favorite Purchase:** Haim’s “Women in Music Part III” on yellow vinyl
This album has quickly become one of my favorites in recent years. I’ve spun the standard black vinyl countless times, but finding variants has been a challenge. I was thrilled to discover this yellow pressing at Reckless Records. Additionally, I came across some intriguing Japanese pressings from iconic artists like Queen, Dexter Gordon, and Bill Evans. There may also be a German pressing of The Beatles’ “Revolver” in my collection, although I can’t recall if that was from this year or last.

**Favorite Concert:** The Rolling Stones in Denver, Colorado
After waiting for years to see The Rolling Stones, I finally made it happen this year. I originally bought tickets for my dad in 2019, but the pandemic delayed their performance at Petco Park in San Diego. It was worth the wait! The energy at the show was electric, with the band performing as though they were decades younger. Ronnie Wood stood out for me, and I particularly enjoyed Keith Richards’ three-song segment in the middle of the show. The evening was a continuous journey through their remarkable catalog, with classics like “Sympathy For the Devil” ringing through the venue.

**Other Memorable Concerts:** I also had a blast at Jack White and Vampire Weekend shows.

**Least Favorite Concert:** The Decemberists in DC
I’m starting to wonder if they just aren’t my cup of tea. After catching a couple of new tracks on the radio, I decided to see The Decemberists live. While I enjoyed “Burial Ground,” the rest of the performance left me feeling a bit underwhelmed, particularly their lengthy 16-minute song, “Joan In The Garden,” which didn’t have the same impact live.

**Most-Played Band:** The Grateful Dead
No surprise here, I suspect!

**Favorite Radio Station:** 88.5M The SoCal Sound
This station has been my go-to since 2018. Though I miss my favorite DJ who moved to Chicago, the music continues to be fantastic.

**Top New Album:** “Songs of a Lost World” by The Cure
I previously highlighted this album as Track of the Day a few weeks ago. It’s a remarkable record showcasing The Cure at their finest.

**Top New Song:** “Coming to a hoddle near you”
A catchy tune worth checking out!

**Track of the Day:** “Lost Changes” by Beth Gibbons

In conclusion, while the past year had its ups and downs, the love for music remains strong. Whether through new vinyl finds, exhilarating concerts, or favorite radio stations, there are always moments to cherish in the world of music. Let’s celebrate these highlights and look forward to what the next year brings for our favorite artists and genres!
