The Veilomani Women’s Club in Nabouono Village, Udu Point, is making strides in local community sustainability through its cattle farming initiative. This agricultural project is not only revitalizing the villagers’ approach to food sourcing but is also significantly impacting traditional event planning and catering practices.
Talica Vugayawa, a member of the club, highlighted the affirmative outcomes of this project. By providing an alternative meat source, the initiative has contributed to a reduction in the harvesting of sea turtles, traditionally relied upon for significant community events. Vugayawa noted, “With the increase in cattle since the launch of this project, we’ve received positive feedback. During the Provincial Council meeting, we were able to feed hundreds of people with our beef.”
The transition to cattle farming is also streamlining the logistical aspects of organizing large gatherings, alleviating the need for villagers to travel great distances for meat purchases. Government regulations surrounding turtle harvesting have tightened, prompting more communities to consider sustainable alternatives like cattle farming. Vugayawa elaborated that when villagers apply for turtle harvesting permissions, approvals are often limited to just two turtles, making beef a more practical and abundant choice.
The community’s commitment to protecting sea turtles is evident. Vugayawa emphasizes, “When comparing the meat yield from two turtles to that of a single cow, the sustainability factor is clear. It’s essential to protect our turtles and oceans for future generations.”
In addition to cattle farming, the Veilomani Women’s Club is set to expand its agricultural work to include beekeeping. After completing training in this area, the club members are seeking support from various organizations to fund their new venture. This diversification not only fosters ecological sustainability but also aims to enhance the overall economic resilience of the village.
The success of this initiative reflects a broader commitment within the region to balance traditional practices with sustainable livelihoods. The proactive measures taken by the Veilomani Women’s Club exemplify how local communities can adapt to preserve their cultural heritage while ensuring environmental stewardship, paving the way for a hopeful future that marries tradition with sustainability.
