Assistant Minister Sakiusa Tubuna recently addressed the Macuata Provincial Council, highlighting the essential role that villages and rural communities play in achieving the government’s objectives, particularly in areas like water, energy, and infrastructure. Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, Tubuna urged local leaders to enhance their development strategies, noting that Fiji’s goal of becoming a high-income economy by 2050 relies on proactive initiatives at the grassroots level.
He stressed that villages must be well organized and equipped with necessary resources before expecting substantial progress from government efforts. “We cannot have so much progress when the village is not even in order,” he stated. This call to action reflects a growing recognition of the need for shared responsibility in development, advocating that communities take the lead rather than solely depending on government funding.
Macuata Provincial Administrator Revoni Rakasalu provided insight into the ongoing efforts to address specific challenges faced by rural areas, reporting that assessments and surveys are actively being conducted across the province. “Works and surveys are being carried out in the 12 districts of Macuata, and we will continue to monitor all the needs and challenges on the ground when it comes to village development,” he explained, highlighting a focused approach to local issues.
Additionally, the meeting touched upon future government plans to launch a pilot Community Empowerment Programme in Cakaudrove, which is intended to expand into more provinces in the coming years. This initiative aims to increase community engagement and support development efforts.
The government has previously shown its commitment to improving infrastructure and services in Macuata, with a significant funding allocation of $637 million dedicated to enhancing essential services throughout Fiji, especially in the Northern Division. This includes investments in critical areas such as road maintenance, water supply systems, and communication services, all crucial for uplifting community standards of living.
Furthermore, an allocation of $900,000 has been designated for clean drinking water projects in the villages of Niurua and Naqumu, demonstrating ongoing efforts to provide essential resources. Such investments promise an optimistic outlook for living standards, fostering resilience against challenges, and aligning with Fiji’s developmental goals.
The partnership between local leaders and government representatives illustrates a commitment to transform the lives of residents and bolster community well-being, embodying a collective vision for a sustainable and prosperous future in Fiji.
