Village Boys gear up for Wairiki 7s as Fiji Bitter series second leg kicks off

The Village Boys rugby team is approaching the Wairiki 7s tournament with a spirit of determination, ready to compete in the second leg of the Fiji Bitter series starting tomorrow. After a solid kickoff to the series with a narrow win of 15-12 against Kava Vacalea in Levuka, the team is eager to extend their winning streak.

Head coach Epeli Matata praised the dedication and preparation displayed by the team over the past week. He noted, “The boys have been preparing well, and with a good start in Levuka, they are now focused and ready for the task ahead.” Matata highlighted that skill development has been central to their training, with an emphasis on set pieces and ball play aimed at boosting their performance on the field.

While they face the setback of two injured players, the team plans to maintain its competitive edge by fielding the same lineup as in the Yalovata 7s. Matata explained, “We have two injured players, but they will be replaced, and we are excited to feature the same team from the Yalovata 7s for this tournament.” This continuity in the lineup aims to maintain their momentum and adaptability in the face of adversity.

The Wairiki 7s not only provides an opportunity for seasoned players but also serves as a platform for younger teammates to gain invaluable experience. “We have a young side, and it’s beneficial for these players to play with the more experienced ones, allowing them to learn and grow,” Matata remarked.

Despite facing financial challenges, including players covering their own travel costs and fundraising efforts, Matata praised the team’s resilience. “It has been tough, but we keep pushing through. These players love the sport, and they play from their heart,” he stated, expressing gratitude towards their devoted supporters, particularly the families who have stood by them since the beginning.

The Wairiki 7s tournament is set to commence tomorrow and will continue through Saturday, promising an exhilarating weekend of rugby as teams compete fiercely for victory.
