A simple act of kindness has blossomed into an inspiring moment for 19-year-old Viliame Waqalevu. The young rugby player from Bouma, Taveuni, is currently competing with the Dominion Brothers under-21 team at the 17th Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament held at Ganilau Park. This tournament marks his debut, where he not only demonstrates his rugby skills but also exemplifies camaraderie and generosity.
Waqalevu has expressed how rewarding his experience at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s has been, emphasizing the importance of facing tough competition to refine his abilities on the field. A standout moment occurred when he was spotted sharing his rugby boot with a fellow player from a rival team, an act that went viral online on February 5.
Reflecting on his connection with the other player, Waqalevu said, “I’ve known him since our YMCA days, that’s why we’re so close. We used to share bus cards, food, and even clothes at times.”
His generosity did not go unnoticed. Renowned sports photographer Pita Simpson saw the act and presented Waqalevu with a new size nine rugby boot on February 6, allowing him to continue participating in the tournament without worrying about his footwear.
Waqalevu’s rugby journey began in his early years, playing kaji rugby and later competing at Nasinu Secondary School. His passion for the sport has led him to participate in significant matches, including the prestigious Deans final.
As the eldest of six siblings from a humble household, Waqalevu has developed strong values rooted in family support. He openly credits his success to his family’s unwavering encouragement, stating, “My family is my biggest support system, and because of their love and teachings, I’m able to play and be part of the team.” His mother, a teacher, and his father, a farmer, have instilled in him the determination to thrive in sports.
