The Minnesota Vikings have made a strategic move by extending the contract of tight end Josh Oliver for three years, enhancing their offensive lineup. While the financial details of the deal were not made public, Oliver’s contributions to the team are expected to be significant both in blocking and potential scoring opportunities.
Last season, Oliver set personal bests with 258 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Although primarily known for his blocking prowess, his size makes him a notable red zone target. In the absence of No. 1 tight end T.J. Hockenson during the early part of last season due to injuries, Oliver stepped up, participating in a career-high 56% of the offensive snaps. He also played an important role on special teams.
The Vikings have a solid tight end lineup which includes Oliver, Hockenson, and rookie talent Gavin Bartholomew, alongside undrafted prospects Bryson Nesbit and Ben Yurosek. Additionally, they welcomed free agent Giovanni Ricci to bolster their tight-end depth.
As the Vikings aim for success this season, all eyes will be on second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to lead their offensive strategy and harness the skills of the tight end group.
As the season progresses, this renewed commitment to Oliver could play a crucial role in fortifying the Vikings’ offense, especially in crucial plays around the red zone.
