Vietnam’s U23 team has progressed to the quarterfinals of the U23 Asian Cup as Group A leaders following a stunning 1-0 victory over the host nation, Saudi Arabia, on January 12. The match took place at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium and marked a significant achievement for Vietnamese football.

Despite Saudi Arabia’s dominance in possession and several threatening opportunities in the first half, it was Vietnam’s goalkeeper, Trung Kien, who played a crucial role in keeping the score level, making several key saves to thwart the hosts’ attempts at goal.

The match saw a dynamic shift in the second half when substitute Dinh Bac made his mark in the 64th minute. Receiving a clever pass from Ngoc My, Bac unleashed a well-placed left-footed shot from a tight angle, finding the back of the net and giving Vietnam the lead.

The goal invigorated Vietnam, allowing them to assert control over the game while resolutely defending against a determined Saudi Arabian side that desperately sought an equalizer. Trung Kien continued to shine, with more critical saves in the closing stages of the match as Vietnam held firm under intense pressure.

This impressive victory not only secured Vietnam a place in the quarterfinals but also meant Saudi Arabia’s exit from the tournament. Jordan U23 will join Vietnam in the next round after clinching the second qualifying position with a narrow 1-0 win against Kyrgyzstan.

Vietnam’s performance demonstrates resilience and skill, setting a hopeful tone for their journey ahead in the tournament.
