He was a four-time Pro Bowler and is credited with redefining the quarterback position by showcasing the dual-threat capabilities of running and passing.
Despite facing significant challenges in his career, including an 18-month prison sentence for involvement in a dogfighting ring, Vick made a commendable return to the NFL after his release in 2009, earning the AP Comeback Player of the Year award with the Eagles in 2010. Norfolk State’s decision to hire Vick comes after parting ways with their previous coach, Dawson Odums, following a 4-8 season. The university, a historically Black institution, competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Spartan football team has a limited history of playoff appearances, with only one recorded run in the FCS playoff in 2011.
