The investigation into potential connections between specific police officers and the illicit drug trade is intensifying, with a particular focus on the source of viral messages circulating on Viber. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed the conclusion of a comprehensive digital forensic analysis conducted on devices belonging to seven officers linked to these widely shared screenshots.
Commissioner Tudravu revealed that assistance from international law enforcement agencies, including the Australian Federal Police and their U.S. counterparts, has been vital in recovering deleted messages from the officers’ phones. He stressed the importance of determining the origin of the messages as a crucial step in advancing the investigation.
“Our priority is to find the source,” Tudravu emphasized, noting that identifying the individual responsible for the messages would provide key evidence for any potential legal action. To this end, a senior detective has traveled to Sydney to obtain a statement from the person who first uploaded the screenshots that triggered the investigation.
The commissioner firmly rejected claims that the police force is shielding the implicated officers or hindering the inquiry. He assured the public of a steadfast commitment to uncovering the truth, stating, “If there is a link, you are out. If the allegation is linked to me, I am out.”
As the investigation progresses into its second phase, the focus has shifted to conducting financial checks on the officers named in the social media allegations. Tudravu noted that while the initial phase concentrated on digital examinations, the new phase is crucial for understanding the financial backgrounds of the officers in question, underscoring the gravity of the claims being pursued.
“Investigators are making headway. We are eager to get to the bottom of all this,” he remarked, reinforcing the importance of basing decisions on solid evidence that adheres to legal standards. He reiterated that actions regarding the potential removal of officers will not be influenced by public opinion or conjecture online.
Acknowledging the community’s skepticism, Tudravu called for patience, highlighting that thorough investigations require time. He stressed that all allegations are treated with seriousness and that due process is essential to uphold the integrity of the police force.
This diligent and transparent approach shows a commitment to accountability within law enforcement, fostering hope that the investigation will lead to a resolution that respects justice and maintains public confidence.
