A man from Wanibuku, Nakasi, has been charged with identity theft after allegedly posing as the Commissioner of Police on Viber to solicit money from unsuspecting individuals. This charge follows discussions with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and is in accordance with the Cybercrime Act of 2021.
The Fiji Police have confirmed that the accused will face the court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today. This incident highlights a growing trend of online scams and identity theft, reminiscent of a recent case involving a couple in Labasa. The couple was apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s MPaisa Taskforce for engaging in fraudulent activities to manipulate victims and gain illicit access to their Viber accounts to request funds.
In response to these incidents, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant against online scams and to promptly report any suspicious communications to authorities. These proactive measures demonstrate law enforcement’s dedication to tackling cybercrime and safeguarding the community. As efforts continue, there is hope for a more secure digital landscape, reinforcing the need for caution in online interactions. By fostering awareness and collaboration, the community can work towards a safer environment for all users.
