Veveni Lasaqa, a talented flanker hailing from Vanua Levu, has recently returned to his roots in Natabua after a remarkable 14-year absence. The 23-year-old athlete surprised his grandmother, Emele Lasaqa, who played a crucial role in his upbringing, during an emotional reunion last Friday. Lasaqa’s journey in rugby has taken significant strides, as he has earned a spot among the four Fijians selected for the Highlanders squad in the upcoming 2026 Super Rugby season.
His rugby journey began in Fiji, nurtured by his grandmother’s unwavering support. Following the departure of his father, Viliame Lasaqa, to New Zealand in search of better opportunities, young Veveni was raised by Emele. After completing his primary education in Natabua, he continued his studies at Tauranga Boys’ College in New Zealand, where his passion for rugby truly blossomed.
Reflecting on his debut season with the Highlanders, Lasaqa expressed immense gratitude for his newfound opportunity. “It was my first year playing for rugby, and it was really great. Hopefully, the next two years will be better,” he stated. He aims to build his individual confidence and apply it effectively in future competitions.
A highlight of the 2026 season will be the match between the Highlanders and the Fijian Drua, set to take place at Ba’s new 4R Stadium on May 2. Lasaqa shared his excitement about the game while also acknowledging the challenges posed by the humid conditions, particularly after adapting to New Zealand’s cooler climate. “It’s going to be a tough one… Hopefully the boys just stick to the plan and come out with a win,” he remarked.
Lasaqa’s story resonates with themes of determination and resilience, further emphasized by the important role his family has played in his life. As he prepares to take the field, he not only carries the hopes of his family but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring young athletes in Fiji. With deep ties to his homeland, Lasaqa is not just pursuing personal success; he embodies the dreams and sacrifices of those who have supported him throughout his journey, turning his aspirations into a beacon of hope for others in the community.
