Ronald Darby, the veteran cornerback, has decided to retire from the NFL, as reported by ESPN. The 31-year-old player informed the Houston Texans of his decision, despite having signed a one-year contract with the team in March.
Darby’s retirement comes just days after another significant announcement in the league, with Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow also stepping away from football, citing health concerns.
Throughout his impressive 10-season career, Darby played for six teams: the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a key player for the Eagles during their Super Bowl LII victory against the New England Patriots, where he contributed four tackles and two passes defensed.
Drafted in the second round by the Bills in 2015 out of Florida State, Darby quickly made a name for himself, earning votes for Defensive Rookie of the Year with a standout first season that included 68 tackles, 21 passes defensed, and two interceptions. He also enjoyed a productive season in 2017 with the Eagles, racking up a career-high three interceptions. His defensive prowess continued to shine with Washington in 2020 when he led the team with 16 passes defensed, securing a lucrative contract with the Broncos.
Over his career, Darby accumulated impressive statistics, including 447 total tackles, 106 passes defensed, and eight interceptions across 118 NFL games. He also celebrates a national championship title with Florida State from 2013, adding another highlight to his football legacy.
